Behind the stories

From the Backroads
to the Written Page

Shannon L. Salley is an Eastern Kentucky author, former police officer and K9 handler. His Appalachian roots and years in law enforcement help shape his stories, the places, the people and the bonds that hold them together.

Shannon first began writing in middle school. After completing a short story writing assignment, he fell in love with writing. For years, his stories were something he shared with family, with little thought of publishing. His wife encouraged him to let other people read them, and that encouragement eventually led him to share the Trail of Justice series.

The series follows retired deputy Alex Anders and his bloodhound, Radar, through the secrets of a small Kentucky county. Radar draws inspiration from two dogs close to Shannon’s heart: RIP, his search and rescue police bloodhound, and Ladybird, his pet bloodhound.

Through Alex and Radar, Shannon brings his love of storytelling together with a world he knows firsthand: rural communities, police work, and the partnership between a handler and his dog.

The real dogs behind the fiction

The Bloodhounds Behind Radar

Radar’s story begins with two real bloodhounds: RIP and Ladybird.

RIP · The working partner

RIP was Shannon’s male search and rescue police bloodhound. His name was chosen by a vote of elementary school students—a special connection between a working K9 and the community he served. Shannon’s experience working alongside RIP helped inspire the partnership between Alex Anders and Radar.

Ladybird · The companion at home

Ladybird is Shannon’s female pet bloodhound and the other half of Radar’s inspiration. Together, Ladybird and RIP helped shape the fictional hound readers meet in the Trail of Justice series, bringing a piece of Shannon’s life—both on duty and at home—to the page.

One fictional bloodhound. Two real inspirations.
